A Comprehensive Guide to Getting Invisalign

If you have ever considered straightening your teeth, Invisalign® may be the solution you are looking for. This treatment offers a discreet, convenient, and effective way to achieve a beautifully aligned smile. The following guide will walk you through the process of getting Invisalign, from your initial consultation to post-treatment care.

Consultation

The journey towards a straighter smile begins with an initial consultation. Schedule an appointment with a certified Invisalign provider, typically a dentist or orthodontist. During this visit, the provider will assess the patient's oral health, discuss their goals, and determine if Invisalign is the option for the patient's specific needs and goals.

Personalized treatment plan

After the consultation, the dentist will create a customized treatment plan. They will take impressions (molds) of the patient's mouth. These precise measurements are the foundation for creating a personalized set of aligners. These aligners gradually shift the patient's teeth into the desired position. The patient will wear each set of aligners for about two weeks before moving on to the next set.

Fitting the aligners

Once the aligners are ready, the patient will return to the dentist's office to ensure that the aligners fit properly. They will also provide the patient with detailed instructions on how to wear and care for the aligners. It is important to follow these instructions diligently to ensure one gets the best results from the treatment.

Wearing the aligners

Consistency is key to the success of Invisalign treatment. The patient should wear their aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day. They should only remove the aligners for eating, drinking (except for water), brushing, and flossing. The more the patient adheres to this schedule, the more effective the treatment will be.

Monitoring the progress

The patient must attend periodic checkup appointments with us throughout the treatment. Our team will monitor the patient's progress, ensuring their teeth move into their desired position. They will also provide the next set of aligners. These appointments allow the dentist to make any necessary adjustments to the patient's treatment plan. Sometimes, the patient may need additional aligners to achieve optimal results. These refinements are normal and ensure that their smile reaches its full potential.

Completing treatment

The duration of treatment varies from patient to patient. In some cases, it may take as little as six months, while others may take up to 18 months to two years. It also depends on the patient's adherence to their treatment and the dentist's instructions.

Wearing a retainer

In order to maintain their new smile, the patient will likely need to wear a retainer. Retainers help prevent their teeth from shifting to their original positions. They only need to be worn for a few hours every day; dentists often recommend wearing a retainer at night, as that is typically the most convenient time for patients.
