Back to School Dental Visit – What Parents Need to Know

Hello Parents! We are weeks away from school starting. While running out to get school supplies, lunch bags, and clothes are important, it is just as important to schedule your child’s dental appointment. Did you know? Children with poor oral health are 3x more likely than their counterparts to miss school because of dental pain. At Lee Family Dentistry, we pride ourselves on being the best pediatric dentists in Oxford, MS. We treat every child as if they were our own.

3 Common Back to School Dental Procedures

1. General Exams

General exams are when the dentist does a routine check-up of your teeth and gums. This usually includes X-rays (especially for teens that may need braces) and general cleanings. Children, as well as adults should visit their dentists every 6 months.

2. Cavities, Filling, and Sealants

Tooth Decay affects 42% of children 2 to 11 years old. Tooth Decay also known as a cavity is caused by a combination of factors such as poor oral hygiene and sugar eating away at the enamel. The wearing of enamel creates holes in the tooth which is called a cavity. Cavities are usually treated by using fillings, sealants, or crowns.

3. Braces

Like the two procedures above, braces are very common. The ideal age for braces is between 10 and 14. Although, it comes down to the discretion of your dentist and orthodontist. If your child needs braces, we could refer you to an orthodontist. Although, if the misalignment is not severe, we could correct the alignment with short-term clear braces.
