Getting Approved for Invisalign

Invisalign® is an increasingly popular alternative to traditional metal braces. Many are attracted to its benefits, such as the ability to align their teeth discreetly, comfortable wear, quick treatment times, and the ability to remove the appliance. However, before you settle on this treatment, we need to ensure you are approved for this type of treatment, as the system is not for everyone.

Schedule a consultation with a certified Invisalign provider

The first step is to find an Invisalign provider. Invisalign is a specialized treatment that requires expertise to administer, which only some orthodontists and dental professionals have the authority to do. An Invisalign provider has the knowledge and training to evaluate patients' dental conditions and determine if Invisalign is the right appliance for them.

Once a provider, like ours, has been located, patients must schedule a consultation. The purpose of this appointment is to evaluate patients' dental condition lifestyle and discuss their goals and expectations from treatment, all of which will help determine candidacy.

Undergoing a physical examination

The physical examination aims to give the orthodontist a better understanding of the patient's dental state. They will also order X-rays before discussing their findings with the patient over a 3D digital model of their teeth. The 3D digital model is to help patients fully process how the Invisalign treatment or another orthodontic appliance will adjust their smile and which will adequately meet their needs. This portion of the consultation will be painless, requiring no anesthesia, cutting, or injections. The orthodontist and staff will simply guide patients through each phase.

Discuss the intended treatment plan

After determining the patient is a candidate, the orthodontist will review the expected treatment duration, frequency of appointments, what is necessary when wearing the aligners, and cost of treatment. However, a desk-stationed team member may review the latter. They will also review the patient's available insurance coverage and payment plans.

Candidates need to understand that even if their dental state allows for Invisalign, their lifestyle and level of responsibility are also factors. Responsibility is key to ensuring patients progress in their treatment plan efficiently. Patients need to follow the treatment plan, or they will prolong the process. The main rules to remember are to wear the aligners a minimum of 20 hours a day and only remove them to eat, floss, and brush.

What to expect after approval

After approval and a treatment plan are established, patients will schedule an appointment to return to the office to receive their first set of Invisalign clear aligners, crafted with the help of the impressions taken during the physical examination. Patients must return to the orthodontist every two weeks for new aligners and to ensure they diligently follow maintenance instructions.
