So what to do?
1. Brush your teeth twice daily It is ideal to brush teeth after every meal to prevent plaque right away. However, twice a day is the minimum amount. Make sure you replace your toothbrush regularly. Brushing teeth at night time is especially important to prevent plaque sitting on your teeth during the night.
Furthermore, brush them the right way:
- Brush for at least two minutes
- Use circular strokes
- Brush your tongue to scrape away bacteria
2. Clean between your teeth
Plaque does not only develop on your teeth, but especially between your teeth.
Make sure you find a way to clean between your teeth. Flossing your teeth is the
easiest way to remove plaque between the teeth. Some effective tools are dental
picks, pre-threaded flossers or water flossers.
3. Avoid sugary food
Bacteria feed on sugar. So the more sugary food you eat, the easier the bacteria
can grow. Part of the worst food for your teeth you can eat are sticky candies,
carbonated soft drink or starchy foods (potato chips or bread). Alcohol also is
tough on your teeth.
4. Use mouthwash
Using antibacterial mouthwash is another option to prevent plaque. It generally
loosen plaque which makes it easier to remove. Gargle the mouthwash once a
day or adjust according to what feels good for your teeth.
